I have a large format scanner and a PC with Wideimage software pre-installed. I have the original installation disc and manual, but not the key. Is it possible to read the key from the registry so that if the HD fails I can re-install. In another post someone suggests (in this case adobe) to write in to adobe with photocopies of the manual etc, but in the case of Contex I have e-mailed them regarding a different scanner installation, and never received a reply. I know this is a grey area, but it would be nice to know if this is possible.note that I am not asking for a key, but simply a pointer to recovering my own key!

Nothing 'gray' about wanting to keep reinstalling software you paid dearly for. What I do in cases like this for clients is I go through the registry and find ALL ***ALL*** occurrences of the software keys that relate to this particular product -- and I export them ALL, one by one to separate files. Cd check 3 1 14 0 serial number lookup. If there are 10 major level headings in the registry for this product, you will end up with 10 files, with.REG extension. Now say your system dies. Copy the entires from the old program files for this app, and also save the windows/system32 directory of the old failed installation. Now click on all 10 REG files and IMPORT them to the new registry. As you now run the program, it will report missing DLLs -- write them down and copy them from the original windows directory of the old install, into the same palces in the new install.

In this manner, you can MANUALLY RECONSTRUCT essentially every program back to original. I've done it hundreds of times, and it works for EVERYTHING but MS software. It is too buggy to recover.

If you save your current setup now, you don't have to know the key, just reconstruct the registry entries, the program files entries (sometimes settings in your own profile too), and with windows system files. There is NOTHING GRAY about continuing to run software you paid for.
